Description

Effective management of both traditionally sourced and user-generated content will drive value for media owners in the future. But as web users change the way they source and consume content, what are the implications for publishers, their audiences and their revenue streams?

AOP’s forum on copyright and intellectual property on 20 November brings together legal experts to examine rights ownership behind online publishers’ businesses and its importance to their long-term success.

Tom Rubin, Chief Counsel for Intellectual Property at Microsoft will discuss building a healthy online ecosystem for publishers, exploring the fine balance between promoting creativity and driving online commerce: creating a consumer-friendly environment, while respecting creators' rights and fostering technological innovation.

Rubin will be joined by Dominic Young, Director of Editorial Services for News International, and Andrew Murray, Legal Project Lead, Creative Commons England and Wales and Reader in Law, London School of Economics. Andrew Yeates, Solicitor and IP Adviser to AOP will chair the forum, taking place at IPC Media offices.

Murray will speak on encouraging creativity in a UGC age, looking at the impact of user-generated content on copyright, and whether we should be looking to “set material free”, while Young will present the publisher view on this, looking at ways of working with search engines and developing a “real market with proper rules”.

The event takes place on Thursday 20 November from 2pm to 5.30pm at IPC Media Offices.
