Description

Dorkbot - people doing strange things with electricity

The name Dorkbot often brings an inquisitive look to most peoples faces, quite a unique name and yet one that is known worldwide by some. Amusingly, It’s sometimes hard to explain what Dorkbot is! This is because it’s truly multi disciplinary, it encourages people to attend from all sorts of backgrounds. Often those attending are artists, inventors, scientists, engineers and here in Bristol we have many that attend who like to “push at” technology.

Our meetings aim to be broad and inclusive whilst encouraging the curious, exciting and most innovative of content.  Less formal and more about keeping it real, we have ‘Show & Tell’ sessions. These sessions offer a platform to encourage homegrown talent to demonstrate new projects or even just share new ideas or hi-light something that might be
of interest to the group.

A typical meeting might be a talk on Robotics from students who have just finished building a robot to established artist Luke Jerram talking about his latest project ‘Dream Director’.
A regular inventor John Honiball, regularly brings antiquities of technology gone by for members to marvel and wonder at or even work out what it does?!! On a weekend we sometimes have ‘Hack Day’s’, this is an chance to collaborate or just get together to make things.

Dorkbot’s achievements are mostly unsung, yet quite incredibly Dorkbot plays a globally significant part in encouraging people to get creative with technology. To experiment, to embrace a DIY mode. I agree with founder, Douglas Repetto, when he says “It’s important that people feel like they can participate in our material culture, that they are not simply consumers. So dorkbot has been a nice way to encourage people to participate, while removing some of the pressure to be a star.”

Dorkbot Bristol meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month. It’s open to new members and if you would like to know more you can visit our website by clicking here.

Our membership is free and meetings are also free with donations for refreshments and it’s easy to talk to other members. Meetings are held mainly at the Pervasive Media
Studio, for directions click here. Hosted by Rachel Carney and Mike Harris. You can contact them on dorkbotbristolatgooglemail [dot] com
