How Secure are Your Systems?  Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Digital Security 

Dr. Ilir Gashi (Computer Science, City University London)  Dr. Vladimir Stankovic (Computer Science, City University London)  


 Research in cybersecurity has grown significantly over the last few years, as the world has become more interconnected and as the number of reported incidents of security failures has been increasing. The IT infrastructure is vulnerable to attack, and there is no short or medium term prospect of eliminating the vulnerabilities with certainty by avoiding all errors in design, configuration and use. Researchers at City University London' Centre for Software Reliability (CSR) have collaborated with various academic, industry and governmental institutions, both in the UK as well as EU and US to address how better and more rigorous experimentation and quantitative security assessment can be done to inform decisions on securing networks and systems and choosing security protection tools. We have also done some qualitative reviews of system specifications, and have recently worked with researchers at City's giCentre in developing methods for visualising the results to benefit security analysts.

In this session we will give an overview of the research conducted over the last five years with various types of systems (e.g. AntiVirus products, Operating systems, Biometric systems, Electronic Voting Systems). 
The session will benefit those with general interests in cybersecurity, data analysis and visualisation. 

Dr. Ilir Gashi is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Software Reliability, Computer Science Department at City University London. His research area is on Software and Systems Engineering. His main research focus is on Security and Forensic Evaluation of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) systems and in dependability and security evaluation challenges posed by emerging and future systems. He has been closely involved in most of the security research undertaken at CSR since 2005, co-authoring the papers and proposals that resulted from this research.  

Dr. Vladimir Stankovic is a Lecturer at the Centre for Software Reliability, Computer Science Department at City University London. He has been involved in CSR's ongoing initiative in dependability and security assessment of computer-based systems. He obtained the Ph.D on the topic of design and performance evaluation of diverse database replication protocols. His research interests are system dependability and security assessment, diversity and software fault tolerance, distributed systems algorithms and replication protocols, and concurrent and parallel computing.
