Fletch-

What Adam was talking about was placing the transparent vector shape on a
normal layer above the art you want to reveal. Mask layers do not support
vector transparency or bitmap alpha transparency. In order to use these
features you must use a normal layer.

Adam's suggestion is a good one if all you need is a clean gradient
transition. My suggestion of using a bitmap with alpha transparency on the
leading edge is more involved but allows you to create custom edge effects
in the alpha channel of the bitmap.
