Subject: RE: FLASH: What about *this* Flash book? (Mohler)

I've had Mohler's book for several weeks now and I find it one of the
better books out there. It has a pretty large section on actionscripting and
it covers all of the fundamentals very well.

Unfortunately the actionscripting sections in most Flash books are really
poor, I've only encountered 2 books, so far, that cover it better than most
and Mohler's books is one of them. The other is "Flash 4! Creative Web
Animation" by Franklin & Patton. Actually the later has the biggest section
I've seen on actionscripting and it's very methodical. Overall however
Mohler's book is one of the best books out there. I'm looking forward to
seeing what the "Flash 4 Bible" has to say on the issure of actionscripting.

"Flash 4 Magic" is another very good book as well, but it's more of a
cookbook sort of approach which is good for some people but I feel it's not
good for many of us, myself included. It gives great "canned" solutions but
doesn't do as good of a job explaining the "why" which I feel is much more
important than the "how". You can give almost anyone a solution, in any
language i.e. PERL, JAVA, etc, but that doesn't always go very far towards
makeing someone an effective programmer... unfortunately.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I think that Chrissy was giving this book away at some point so someone
other than I must have it. I actually had Prof. Mohler as an instructor when
I was in college, and I think he is brilliant. He has written a number of
books on interactivity and design. When writing the book he looked for works
people could donate to the book for tutorials and I actually pitched one in
for Tell Targets. Other people contributing (I believe) are the people from
Insomnious (who have redesigned their site recently) and there was some
involvement from the people at Vecta3D. Like it says in the description,
this was written to be a textbook that Prof. Mohler could use in a class to
teach Flash. I think the book does a good job of taking people from the
beginning and getting them to the more difficult material. I haven't read
John's book or Flash 4 Magic, but I am guessing that if you are JUST looking
for actionscripting, this isn't the book, however if you have never taken a
class in Flash here's your chance, this book does a good job.

I am a bit biased so if anyone else uses the book, I would like to hear what
you think.
