Hi John,


You common sense on the issue of ownership is flawed.


First, just because you post to a public forum doesn't mean you lose

copyright to your words. For instance no one can put together a

collection of my posts and sell or even give them away without my

permission.


Second, only the owner of the list has the right to provide an archive

for List. He is in effect the publisher. And even he does not have the

right to publish an archive in any form other than complete. He has no

more right than anyone else to publish in another form without the

permission of the author(s). The Best of the Flasher List would have to

have th permission of anyone quoted.


The fact that the forum is free has a bearing only in court when

compensation is determined.


The knowledge derived and the facts can not be copyrighted, but the

words, if unique are protected. Of course, anyone has the right to quote

small passages. And you can keep copies for your own use, but you have

no more right to redistribute these posts than you have to give away

copies of books or software.


Unless you sign your rights away -- you words, graphics and code are

yours if they are unique and put in any tangible form.
