John,
True, it would be great, especially for us game programmers who have our
scoreboards, info, etc driven by local databases, so we can only serve the
games off our servers.
The risk is you could say:
Load Variable
server.domain.com/somefolder/somefile.txt
And look at that, you have have someones files. This would only work with
people's NT machines which are configured incorrectly, but that happens
pretty often it would seem.
hacking with Flash, pretty funny huh?
As far as implementation without risk, I have not heard anything about it.

Thanks Brad,
That is unfortunate. This capability would really put Flash over the
top as a development tool, as well as benefitting the web community
by reducing traffic and server loads. Has there been any discussion
as to how this could be implemented without the security risk? What
are the risks?
