I'm sorry you lost time on this, but am glad you were able to isolate the
cause so precisely.

For context, yes, bad fonts are definitely a possibility... could be from
the copy of the font itself, or from a font utility (Adobe Type Manager
regularly breaks applications), or even from the number of fonts
installed... all of these have caused problems for others in the past.

(Just to be on the safe side, it could be good to test against that
hypothesis with a one-or-all-movies test... if that copy of Helvetica fails
in only the one movie, then it may be damage to the file itself, rather
than a problem with the font system!)

No happy ending, I know, but I hope that background is of some use. :(
