You touched on a sensitive issue.
The French government is trying to prevent the English language to
penetrate France but young people must learn English to be competitive in
the industry, or simply go on the web (most sites are in English).

Besides your attitude is unusual. Most Americans expect the French to
understand English.
I am torned and can have an opinion, being a French expatriate in the US
for 16 years.
