i'm feeling a little confused here - is clay irked by flash
animations per se, gifs-as-text per se, or is he just having a
felix-style rant on accessibility? i looked at our own front page -
it's got gifs describing what we do and how our 'large' clients
relate to us. but it's also got a link offering a text-only site (and
yet another version for webtv browsers) which complies to all the w3c
accessibility guidelines... but we are known for building pretty
sites...

so what are you complaining about clay? (and why swear while doing it?)

>Is "tossers" UK slang for
>clients who know what their users want and won't be bullied into
>building cool distractions instead?

clients always know what their market wants. they never, in my
(limited) experience, know what the online consumer requires *in
order to produce the results demanded* - that's why they use
specialists, expert external suppliers. some of the people at our
client BigLargeCorporateBusinesstoBusinessFirm were horrified that we
wanted to do away with the 70,000 words of info their very expensive
focus group said it wanted, but we turned in 30 5-million-pound leads
in a couple of months.

a good agency will listen to your thoughts and add them to the pile
of points to answer when creating your brand's new media strategy.

but if you want an agency that will kowtow to your views on what will
be successful online, both you and the agency that takes you on are
fools. as of course is the person who wrote

>when all they really need is a
>15 old student who can crunch html...

presumably the same 15 year-old who can do all your corporate
communications because they've got a copy of quark, or create your
corporate identity because they've got photoshop?

back to clay's point: maybe there's an argument that if you want to
save time, call the agencies whose sites prompt you to call them, and
get their addresses emailed to you if you decide to take it any
further.

that way at least you'll make up the time spent downloading a
confidence-inspiring graphic by not having to delete excess agency
details from your contact database later.

all the best
