I think you are confusing yahoo's directory with the search function.

My understanding is that it's yahoo's search function (currently inktomi)
which is to be replaced by google.

The reason yahoo's directories have problems is because there are so many
links to check, so some broken links are probably unavoidable (the links
from yahoo are direct and don't go through their servers so they can't
log broken links directly).

Yahoo have a profit margin of 18% so I don't think they need 'saving'.
