Robert X Cringely (love him or hate him, he is well connected), outlined
a free PC scenario, not based on the FREE-PC model, but closer to the
Mobile Phone model. See
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit19980924.html for details.
The article was posted last september, so the cost of the hardware side
of this equation has changed for the better significantly since then.
Remember hardly anyone needs State of the Art CPUs (Pentium III at 450
MHz or whatever), certainly not for surfing.
As far as the Internet is concerned this also starts to mop up those
people who wouldn't consider buying a PC, which means you're getting new
consumers, not people moving from a different supplier.
