Hm; lots of people have tried this, mainly for remote locations.


If the satellites are geostationary then the latency is an absolute

killer - 2 second turnaround in each connection, etc. Also, the TCP/IP

gurus have to do their stuff right in tuning for satellite links, or

it all grinds to an ugly halt.


The little LEOs  (LEO - low earth orbit) are a much better bet, but the

early ones optimised for voice. I reckon Teledesic will get it right,

but I don't think it is live yet.


Big, long file transers over satellite - great.  Newsfeeds - great.

General surfing....  given the speed of light being what it is, and

TCP/IP being what it is, I'd be very surprised if it was worth it.
