Subject: Fading from a solid colour to transparent in a gradient?

Hey folks,

this morning I was toying with the various colour effects and I
was wondering if there was a way to specify a colour gradient for an
instance of an object in which it fades from a solid colour to a
transparent one. I know you can tweak the colours used by setting the
"Special" tab in colour effects, but is there a way to actually
set the two colours used in the gradient so one of them is transparent?
I think that something like this could make a nice way to create
an effect similar like a star fading into a night sky, for example.
