Yes, there's automatic coercion across datatypes like that. This is more
common in scripting languages than in pure programming languages where
you'd have to explicitly cast types.
(Yup, I'm showing off with esoteric geek language here. ;-)
But yes, you're right, that type change is handled automatically. Thanks
for drawing that distinction between addition and concatenation! 8)
