jd, i always respect your posts, but we seem to be crossing wires here a
bit...

i thought i stated quite clearly that it was *not* a problem in ie4. it is a
problem in ie 4.5. i agree that testing on ie5 is a reasonable next step in
diagnosing the problem, but as producers of content for your product, i don't
think it's our job. downloading and installing beta software (*especially*
ie) is time consuming and dangerous for production machines. it should be
performed by quality assurance staff at the software companies affected by
the problem (mm & ms).
therefore this is not practical:
>[shout] getting in on betas while they're beta is a good thing! [/shout]
i have already done half the job for you (well not you, but mm): i have
identified the exact case where the problem reproducibly occurs. many other
developers have verified the problem. heck, i even maintain an instructional
article on the topic:
http://www.moock.org/webdesign/flash/fillthewindow.html
all i'm asking is that mm (who have budgets for doing this stuff) verify the
problem. if in the process of investigating the problem, someone finds a fix,
so much the better. i even dream of a technote on the subject...
as for contacting microsoft ourselves, please understand how futile that can
be from a single individual's perspective. if there is a problem in ie that
causes flash to be poorly displayed, one complaint to ms from a flash
developer will very likely do very little (ms's first logical assumption will
be that the developer has done something wrong in the embed tag or otherwise
cause the anomaly themselves). clearly macromedia would have much more clout
pointing the problem out to ms.
as i said before, developers are more than willing/able to report bugs and
problems. what they need in return is either a recommended workaround/fix, or
at the very least, documentation on the issue that can be used in an official
way with clients.
don't make me sick dg on you ;P
