If you are creating a movie that has a single path that moves in one
direct without branching (such as is needed if the output destined for
an avi or other non-Flash movie) then stretching out on the timeline is
the right think. This technique is a little difficult to keep track of.

If is the opening animation I would probably leave it on the main
timeline (as Marc suggested) to improve streaming. Therwise, I'd make it
a movie clip.

Movie Clips not only allow you to remove some of the clutter from the
main timeline, but make truly interactive movies easy to design and
implement. There is a small cost in making MCs, but there can be huge
savings in using MCs by allowing structure that is much more suited for
complex interactivity.
