If you do decide to try making the symbols into movie clips
and pasting them into one layer I would love it if you would
do a test! I am curious about file size difference.

If you're game, save it out as a swf from your backup copy
and then save a swf from your new version with fewer
layers. Let us know what the two file sizes are!
