Subject: FLASH: Plugin instalation problems

Flashers, Shockers and Macromedia minions ;)

A bit of background first:
I'm doing some Flash work for a client that has remote posts across a
vast region. These outlets connect via the Internet to the main office
and will be using a browser to access a Flash based site that is a front
end for an automated order system. In itself the solution works very
well, I'm using Flash4 + PHP + MySQL if you want to know.
After a testing phase we are now implementing the solution and this is
where all the problems crop up.
Each location has a windows based computer with the Opera browser.
For those of you that don't know this browser it's a lightweight fast
browser that is quite used in Europe.
Now the problem is installing with installing the plugins.
The process in itself is quite simple. Just direct the browser to MM's
site and download the installer. This part any user can understand.
Close the browser after download execute the downloaded installation
programme. This is where everything goes wrong.
The installer defaults to a netscape browser with an option of selecting
another browser. The user gives the location of the plugin folder of
this other browser the install routine does it stuff and then up pops an
error window saying it can't find C:\Opera\Netscape or one of it's
components !
What's the logic behind this ? If it's another browser why does the
installer insist it's Netscape ? Or is this in the great american
tradition of 'you can choose any colour as long as it's black' ?
Anyway disregarding this error condition appears to produce no ill
effects, I think the only thing that happens is that Macromedia does not
get feedback on a successful install.
Does anyone know if this is in fact true, or will the users experience
strange errors later while using Flashed or Shocked based content ?

Nigel
