It's a Mac server. The databases are served by Filemaker Pro 4.1.

Are you trying to get Flash to read directly out of Filemaker Pro, or are you first exporting from Filemaker Pro to a text file, then reading that text into Flash?  I'd like more clarification before attempting to offer suggestions.
