Subject: FLASH: Interrupting streaming media
From: Tim Kolacny

I have a piece that streams .mp3 audio. I want to give the user the
ability to click a button to take them to a different part in the piece
(essentially the next scene). In my tests, when the streaming has not
loaded as far ahead as the marker I want to go forward to, the piece
goes as far as is loaded and then stops, not making it to the marker.

My question is this. Can I stop the piece from streaming the current
section, and essentially jump ahead to a new point not yet loaded and
begin streaming that? This is as simple as jumping to a designated
scene.

Alternately, can I have all the media in one flash file, and put all the
navigation in another? In essence, load the navigation piece with all
the locations to jump to in the media piece and then jump to the
appropriate scene when the user selects it from the menu in the nav
piece?

One way to think of this is a juke box. It normally has a set sequence,
but the user has the option to drop in a quarter and change the order of
the the songs. Am I making any sense? I sometimes feel like I'm
pounding a round peg through a square hole. But I am learning.

Any ideas appreciated.

Regards,
Tim
