Subject: | FLASH: TAN: web and business stats |

Thought I might be able to tap some corporate wisdom.
I need to put together a sales manual for my new salespeople. I was
hoping to use some current stats on the growth the internet, growth of
businesses, sales volumes, and percent of sales for one point.
I was also hoping for some stats to promote regional business or big city
businesses showing how the effective use of existing client mail lists,
e.g., could increase percentage of sales through online ordering.
Anyone know of a site that gives this type of information?
Also, for my own curiosity, anyone have a Top Ten and Bottom Ten list for
business that do/don't do well on the internet <G>. I deal with a few
local merchants in my small town, that I can't recommend for a web
presence. One, a small clothier, can't compete with the big boys in price
or name recognition [LL Bean, Brooks Brothers,etc.]. And personally,
when buying a suit... I want to feel and try on the merchandise. I don't
trust catalog sales. Even among his existing client base, I don't see
him getting many orders via the internet.
BTW, I visited a little hole in the wall antique store and bed and
breakfast last weekend, which looked like a dumpy little place. I was
just curious and asked this grandmother if she was on the internet, and
suddenly I felt like I was in a Discover brokerage commercial. "Sure,"
she said, " I sell about $1,000 a month on ebay, and I have a friend who
sold $5,000 last month. I'm on a list for bread and breakfasts, and
don't want my own web page, cause I can't handle all the business that
comes from that one listing."
I also remember that when JP Morgan started getting stock tips from his
shoe shine boy, he sold all his stocks in 1928-9 and stayed rich
throughout the Great Depression. I don't know exactly how that applies,
but it kinda feels the same way lately.
