The docs have info on dropping out the 1-bit transparent pixels of a
GIF-like file. If you're instead talking about gradual transparency, then
you've presumably got an alpha channel, and the documentation describes PNG
as the format, then.
Tip: Photoshop uses "premultiplied" alpha, and so you might see some white
halos on gradual transparency of some images. If you use Fireworks to
create your 32-bit PNG then you'll have nice, "straight" alpha and won't
usually need to pay attention to matting colors.
Be advised, though, that a 32-bit PNG contains about four times as much
data as an 8-bit GIF. Both are subject to interpolation when resized. I
generally use bitmaps for texturing, myself. (There are certainly sites
that have thought through bitmaps and used them successfully, though.)
