FLASH: symbols do not appear in library

I'm a beginner with Flash.  I have version 4.0.  My problem

is that I can not get my symbols, created in symbol edit

mode, to appear in the scene.


I have followed the instructions in the lessons and book.

They both say that once you create your symbol in symbol

edit mode, you go to EDIT, EDIT MOVIE, and the symbol

supposedly appears in the LIBRARY from which you can drag

the symbol onto the scene.  This doesn't work.


What am I missing?
