In case anyone has experienced any Shockwave headaches like I encountered,
here's a quick summary of my Shockwave 7.02 problem and its fix:
PROBLEM 1:
If you have Shockwave 7.0 installed, update to 7.02 on Netscape, then visit
7.0 content with IE the Shocwave installation will become corrupted.
Symptoms: Can't see any shockwave content; errors of type 10 and 12 occur
when attempting to fix problem; swinit.exe deleted from hard drive causing
startup message error.
(Problem occurs on PC in the combo I described. I haven't tested to see if
it fails the other way around.)
PROBLEM 2:
If you have disabled the Auto-update feature like I always do, a bug in
Shockwave also disables an autorepair feature, hence your Shockwave
installation can't be fixed by going to MM's web site as the plugin
recommends you do when encountering the corruption.
Symptoms: Get stuck in endless loop at MM's web site going from type 10 and
12 errors to reinstallation
SOLUTION:
1. launch the Remote
2. click on the shockwave logo to get a popup menu
3. select Shockwave Settings
4. make sure the Automatic update service is enabled
5. click OK
6. launch affected browser
7. go directly to http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download. DO NOT
visit any shockwave content before going to this page.
8. follow installation instructions to install 7.02
I am NOT happy with the state of 7.02, but I received courteous and quick
help from Macromedia engineers. The main engineer I dealt with was candid in
his acknowledgment of the bugs in the plugin and promised a fix for the next
release. If anyone has any further questions regarding the problem or its
solution, feel free to email me.
