macromedia, microsoft, adobe and a large number of other representatives
are all working on \ with the w3c svg specification. it's going to be
several months (most likely years) before the there's a complete
implementation that will be available that works across platforms and
browsers.

svg will be useful in vector data exchange, but it's a little large for web
use with the file sizes i think, and it relies on different javascript
implementations, one of the reasons it's not supported across the browsers
and platforms. svg seems like it will replace the pdf, which is more of a
companion to flash. the plug in right now is 3 megs i think, that's another
drawback for now.

there hasn't been any announced support for svg by netscape, microsoft or
other browser developers for svg that i know of. right now the current
implementation does not support version 3 browsers, and internet explorer
support on the mac is limited to static svg only.

ubiquity is key. 341,683,457 world wide users of macromedia flash as of
august 1, 2000.

it's always good to have a pulse on the industry so i'd keep checking the
w3c, check out http://www.voicexml.org there's a service at www.tellme.com
that's really fun to play with.
