What does "run through a codec before import" mean? ie what precisely do you do?

Personally I think that standard RealAudio compressions are way better for the web than Flash MP3. Wish Flash had the option to export at RealAudio in addition to MP3 etc. I do not mean a separate audio track with a separate swf. I mean it would be cool if we could export to RealAudio for the suondtrack but it all goes inside one SWF.
Wasn't it announced recently that RealPlayer 8 will support Flash 4. Maybe that is a tiny bit of progress.

Anyway, so what's a codec?

Thanks. After looking at it's abilities, and [Flash 2 only???] it looks
like the only reason to use it is if you want to combine real movie video
and flash sounds, but why put out flash in Real with a second audio
track in Real? Can you sync sound to motion better? Other than that, it
seems a big nothing. Flash's sound compression in MP3 is so good,
especially when run through a codec before import, that I can't see any
reason to use Real ...
