mwAAAHAHAAHA. Yeah, that's good advice. Flash BAD. Max goooood. That's like condemning your friend's new Miata because your Caddy's finally paid for.

I can only figure that you're friend's jealous or grossly misinformed. For my 2 cents, Flash is the best and most exciting design tool I've every used (starting with FH1, Illustrator 88, Quark 3, PS 1, etc.). If you're interested in making your .AI or .FH files come alive, with a gentle learning curve (and long-term scriptability), Flash is the obvious choice. As a graphic designer, I find Flash MUCH easier to work with than Dreamweaver or straight HTML. And, if you are halfway economical in your design/animation choices, 56k is plenty fast enough to carry an interactive experience WAY more cinematic and compelling than simple HTML/JS. If you want to render high-end 3-D scenes and animations, learn Max. Fledgling tools like Swish and Swift 3D are simplifying text animation and 3-D operations for Flash projects, and it seems pretty clear that these (and others) will continue to improve.

The one topic I agree with your friend on is giving your visitors an option. If you want music and lots of objects movings around, resizing, etc., I always appreciate a 'Welcome' page which allows me to choose the high or low-band version of your site. Fortunately, if you build your site in Flash, making an HTML version is extremely easy. You'll lose some measure of functionality and animation, but with clever design manipulation, you won't lose much.

In a nutshell, Flash is the immediate future of interactive design. 248,000,000 downloads. The player comes bundled with NN and IE versions 4.0 and later. A bundled package with Freehand 9 and Flash 5 costs $599. 3D Studio Max costs $3,499. You do the math.
