Yup, photographic bitmaps, if traced to retain their original detail,
usually create much larger files when traced, vectors are mathmatical
equations that define the shapes of your image, so simple images, with
few curves and colors are quite small, however when flash creates a
vector equation to describe complex images, the size of the equation is
often larger than the per-pixel data of the bitmap.

PS, deleting bmp files from the library after tracing should not affect
the size of the swf, as flash publishs to swf only the files that are
on stage in the movie.

Not really. You can also compress the images to jpegs in something
like fireworks or image ready that gives you more control than the %
slider in flash, then make sure 'use imported jpeg data' is checked
(2ble click the jpeg in the library).
