Hmm used to hold true in the early 90's.... but now its all in the
dollersign.... you pay for the performance you get and how the box is put
together.... Ive used NT's that scream and Macs that scream... Ive also
seen the same hardware run dog slow for eather... whichever way you go,
make sure you don't add anything extra (software) that is not essential to
work. Otherwise you can just set there and watch your porformance drop...
even after dropping $8,000......

To tell you the truth.. I'd avoid anything graphic intensive (3D studio Max,
Director, Non-Linear Video etc. ) on a PC.. The Bus/Mother board config just
isn't set up for it.. The Closest thing to a good PC for graphics is an
Integraph dual processor graphics work station.. I'd go with a Mac G4 as it
is still the standard for graphics intensive work and can out perform any PC
MHz/bus/cache speed on the market.. Some may not like Mac but it is the only
choice for high-end graphics besides an SGI (if you can afford that)

Of the three apps. you listed, 3dstudio will take the most resources.
I'm running Max3 on a p3600, 256mb ram, 32mb nvidia video card, and its
still too slow! However, flash (up to ~90mb flas) and director run
fine. My advice would be to build the best 3d studio machine you can
get (for instance: dual p3 700s, 500mb ram, matrox dual monitor card,
dual sony 19" monitors, 18+ gig uw scsi card(s), etc, check over at
alt.3dstudio or the Max list on postforum.com for 2nd op.), get NT
pre-installed (don't even try to run 3dstudio under 9x), I'd avoid
gateway(NT on a 2gig fat partition!-boss ordered) + other 'pro-sumer'
cpus for preinstall of NT, try to spec ibm intellistation or
intergraph, or at least a mftcr that understands NT for graphics so you
son't have to reconfigure. Though you say you don't need to spec a
make, using a pro level wintel box will likely save a whole lot of
hassle (esp. trying to add hi-end components) over a cheaper
'pro-sumer' grade like those offered by dell, gateway, etc.

Anyway, build the best Max box you can and flash/director will run just
fine...
