No. Even if CF does not access mySQL directly, you can use ODBC modules.
It is not conected with PHP in any way. Both can exist alone.

All the data discussed here in the list show the alternatives are not
worth the price. For price understand lack of resources, cryptic
interface, poor documentation, etc.

BTW: My own bedtest is mySQL/PHP based, and it's a great pair.

The machine is a P100 notebook, 16MB RAM, running MS Personal Webserver,
PHP3, Perl and mySQL. It's behind a wingate proxy, and can be accessed
>from outside by a dial-up account.

I can tell you. mySQL/PHP are fast even in this Worst-Case Scenario.
