FLASH: scrolling buttons

I have an image that is to big for the window I am opening it in so I want

to create two buttons that will scroll the image behind a mask, I figured I

could just assign the buttons to move the _x position of the image + or - 1

but that doesn't seem to be scrolling the image but rather making it jump to

a coordinate, does my scripting have to be different, or is there another

way to go about this.
