Virus detection is a reactive process, not a proactive one. If everybody
knew they weren't shipping a virus with one of their files, there wouldn't
be any virii around today. Virii are discovered AFTER they've been spread
around or appeared on the scene, not before.

The way anitvirus programs work is that they look for unusual stings of
coding that may qualify as a potential virus. While it may not be anybody's
intention to ship a virus along, the particular coding of a file may be so
done that a malicious hacker may find a backdoor in your computer security
measures (trojans) using the strings of that file that you're using.

Indeed, the answer will have to come from one of the two companies. I'm sure
that by now they are already on their way to rectify the error.

At the time Flash 4 was shipped there were no known virus infections. It's
much more likely that the updated Norton Antivirus detection is incorrectly
assuming that the Flash 4 Player contains a new virus.

I'll be contacting Symantec to report this problem but I don't anticipate a
resolution until some time after January 3. Most of Macromedia and most of
Symantec are closed during the holiday period.

We had a similar situation occur with Director 4, where McAfee antivirus
mistakenly reported Director as being infected with a virus. They released
an updated virus detection scheme which fixed this problem.

It's rare, but such incidents do occur. It's unfortunate that this one
happened at this time.
