Masks are effectively 1-bit.. though, really, with anti-aliasing, they're
more than that. Basically, the only way I know to have a gradient mask, is
to put the gradient IN the MASKED layer (not the MASK layer).
I doubt the effect you originally asked for is requires frame-by-frame
animation.
