Ask them if they need a Flash programmer or a Director programmer.

Traditionally Shockwave has referred to anything created with Director.
Flash has referred to anything created in Flash. However, the lastest
plugins that contain both Flash and Shockwave plugins are now called
Shockwave Flash which I think confuses people. As well, some people that use
Flash on their sites have Get Shockwave buttons and vice versa. Very
confusing.

Find out what the project is, I'd be willing to bet that you could get away
with doing it in Flash.

HTH, and anyone correct me if I am wrong!

What is the difference between a Shockwave programmer and a Flash
programmer? My firm tells me need they need a Shockwave programmer.
