Hey Scott,
At my company, they are banning us from getting a 56k modem for site
testing, and this is making it nearly impossible to guess if any of our
sites will actually work in the outside world. I was wondering if your
company allows you the use of a 56k modem for testing the load movie
commands. We just started making heavy use of Load Movie commands here, and
of course every Flash movie works perfectly on our internal 100Mb LAN. But
when I go home, and I take a glance at almost any of our latest websites..
all hell breaks lose..
If the loaded movie isnt timed correctly or doesnt have the scripts loaded
at the correct time, then massive sections of the website are not viewable.
After reading your e-mail and learning that different browsers load movies
differently.. I can see that the situation is much worse than I could ever
imagine..
I am curious if any Web Designers out there are also being banned from using
56k modems for testing websites?
If you are being banned from using 56k modems, did they give you a reason
why?
Our IT department thinks that a 56k modem is useless, and that if it runs
perfectly on our LAN, then it will work fine everywhere. I only wish they
would listen to the web designers for once.

I'm actually working on a site that uses loadMovie all over the place. The
whole site is running off of loadMovies actually. This has proven to be
somewhat of a nightmare(as you'll soon find out) in that different browsers
handle it very differently. There are issues with MIME types(which there are
notes on MM site about this although I can't find it now) as well as well as
issues like:
1) Make sure all file names and variable values passed do not contain
spaces. Netscape will freak out and it won't work.
2) If your loading a movie that has code in it make sure that the code
doesn't run or that you don't use that clip until it is fully loaded. This
make take several checking loops if the code in the clip is also pulling in
external variables or clips(as mine is) or if your accessing a database(like
mine is).
Anyways, feel free to email me off list for more specific help. I can give
you a peek at the site I'm working on too. I can't post it on the list(it's
kind of a high profile client).
Scott
