I completely agree - you should make every attempt to simulate your users
enviroment, be it OS, browser or connection speed. It is not possable to
emulate any of these to a satifactory degree - you have to go out and test.
Anyhow - what does a 56k modem cost? Less than 25 in the UK - probably less
in the US. This seems to be another case of an IT deptment playing God.

If your IT people sincerely believe this then they are stupid.
They may not listen to web designers but they will be all ears when
your clients scream and withhold payment for a non-functioning website.
You need to document your forced inability to test your design using
the common bandwidth of internet user.

Hey Scott,
At my company, they are banning us from getting a 56k modem for site
testing, and this is making it nearly impossible to guess if any of our
sites will actually work in the outside world. I was wondering if your
company allows you the use of a 56k modem for testing the load movie
commands. We just started making heavy use of Load Movie commands here, and
of course every Flash movie works perfectly on our internal 100Mb LAN. But
when I go home, and I take a glance at almost any of our latest websites..
all hell breaks lose..
If the loaded movie isnt timed correctly or doesnt have the scripts loaded
at the correct time, then massive sections of the website are not viewable.
After reading your e-mail and learning that different browsers load movies
differently.. I can see that the situation is much worse than I could ever
imagine..
I am curious if any Web Designers out there are also being banned from using
56k modems for testing websites?
If you are being banned from using 56k modems, did they give you a reason
why?
Our IT department thinks that a 56k modem is useless, and that if it runs
perfectly on our LAN, then it will work fine everywhere. I only wish they
would listen to the web designers for once.
