in 3DS Max, you can change the material attributes of an object so that it
is rendered as a "wire" material. This will give you the gridshpere look
you are trying for.

Thanks Gregg,
I've played with one 3d program which allowed me to create the 3D grid,
but I wasn't able to save it as a grid. It expected me to render it with
a skin. Do either of these programs allow you to save a grid creation
as the final product?
