Subject: FLASH: plugin streaming / processor usage
From: Eric Bogs
Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 11:23:51 GMT

I've been researching various sound/Flash combos ... after being impressed
with the audio and interactivity at Echo
(http://www.echo.com/index_invitation.jsp?ref=196453), I tried to take a
crack at my own Flash/audio interactivity.

If you check out my personal site, http://bo.gs/2, you might notice that I
actually use two Flash 5 plugin instances (that is, 2xOBJECT/EMBED).
There's one main one that handles the movie, and then one smaller one which
does nothing but stream the audio.

The reason that I had to use this second plugin was that everything was just
too slow, processor wise, when it was all lumped in to one plugin. When I
had one plugin doing the animations, loading variables, -and- loading and
playing the music SWF, it just ground to a halt.

I'm pretty pleased with the performance after switching to two plugins ...
just wanted to pass this on and see if anyone has any ideas why there would
be a difference in performance. Does the browser allocate more
memory/processor to each plugin instance?

-Eric
