They could be doing this with a mask and moving the text around under the
mask.

But, if you want to do an Alpha fade on text, create your text as a symbol
(these are Flash 4 instructions, I haven't delved into Flash 5 yet) - it
won't work as plain text. Right click on the text and you'll get a box
with two tabs. Choose the "Color Effect" tab and pick "alpha" from the
pull down menu. You can then set the percentage of transparency. You will
want to create a tween so you have a beginning symbol that has an alpha
setting of 100% and an ending symbol with an alpha setting of something
less than that (or visa versa). If you want to move it across the page as
it fades, simply set your tween that way.
