This isn't as well known as it should be: our typography
group has a set of free "core fonts for the web" available at
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fontpack/default.htm
These include Verdana and Georgia, which were designed by
Matthew Carter to be highly legible at low resolutions (like
the screen) or small sizes.
There are also a number of other cool fonts. All free, all
available for both PC and Mac.
