I'm no expert, but i think it has something to do with flash being built to
handle vector images, which are represented by calculations, while director
was built to import bitmaps (comprised of pixels -- although until recently
only 8 bit res).

This article isn't directly related but might be a bit helpful -- it's about
the rendering speed of director (shockwave) vs. flash and talked a little
about image handling.
