"The number of homes surfing the Net via a high-speed connection jumped by 148%
between December 1999 and December 2000, according to data released by
Nielsen/NetRatings on Thursday. High-speed users, which include homes with IDSN,
DSL, LAN or cable connections, now comprise 12% of the total in the U.S. But 56k
modem usage, which grew 87% over the same period, still makes up nearly 60% of
the total market. NetRatings attributed the growth in dial-up connections in
part to increasingly popular free Net access services."
