Richard,
I learned Flash through peachpit press' Visual Quickstart Guide.
The book has a charming light blue and pink color, but it works.
I thoroughly checked out comparable books out there, and in terms of clean
layout of info, step by step, finding out exactly what you need to know,
it's a good book. After that, I moved on to Flashkit.com and foundation
Actionscript for the more intense execution methods. But this book got me going
faster than the Flash Bible (even though I own that as well).
