Hi Derek,

The MIME is set in the Server's software. Each server has its own
technique. But basically all it does is match the extention (such as
swf) to its MIME name (application/x-shockwave-flash for Flash).

MIME is required for proper operation of every file downloaded by the
browser. Most servers include standard ones preinstalled such as text
and html (but not Flash).

Microft Internet Explorer 3+ store the MIME in the registry on Windows
95/98/NT so doesn't rely upon the MIME setting on the server. All other
browsers rely on this and may not work properly with the wrong MIME
type.
