Hi Taylor,
I am not sure what you mean by preview mode. Movie clips play in Test Movie
but not in authoring environment.

Yes, you must use TellTarget whenever you are communicating from one
timeline to another, such as a movie clip to the main timeline, main
timeline to movie clip, movie clip to movie clip, etc. You do not need
Action Script, but if you were to use it you would combine it with TellTarget.
