The hit area should be defined by a solid fill or fills (no lines) that
exist only in the Hit frame. Alternately, if your regular button graphic is
a solid fill, you do not have to add anything to the Hit area and it will
use the graphic shape from the Down, Over, or Up frame (whichever is the
last frame to contain a graphic). Since you might have extra elements in
the button, be sure to delete them from the Hit area (give it its own
keyframe to do this).

Do not allow text in the Hit frame. Do not allow lines in the Hit area. The
color of the fill can be whatever you wish. Gradients in the Hit frame
waste bytes but have no other negative effects.
