If you upgrade to Mac OS 9, you can do genuine File and Application
Sharing over TCP/IP without any further software/hardware. You can do
modem to modem, modem to Internet to modem, ethernet, etc. Assuming you
set priveledges carefuly, it is also entirely secure.
If you must remain with Mac OS 8, you can do simple point to point file
transfers using modem to modem (and Zterm--included with AppleWorks 5),
or Personal Websharing. If you need Program Sharing and true File Sharing
with OS 8, you'd need to add in the full version of Remote Access (you
have the client version installed as default). But, given the cost of
Remote Access, and assuming you don't need to remote-control one of the
Macs, you'd really be better off just upgrading to OS 9, which also
offers a ton of other features over OS 8.x (over 50 new features).
Besides FileSharing over TCP, you can now also run remote AppleScript
over TCP, which has a great many uses in Web developing.
For further information on either route, feel free to contact me.
