http://www.npd.com/corp/whatsnew/macromedia2.htm. Here is the address for
the study conducted by NPD. If you look at the graphic at the bottom, it
shows that more people could view Flash than any of the other streaming
media formats, without having to download a player.
"In September 1999 alone, there were over 20 million downloads of Flash
Player from www.macromedia.com."
If it is assumed that in September users were downloading a player that can
view Flash 4 content and if it is assumed that the download rate for each
month after that is equal to or greater than 20 million, then from September
to December of 1999, the Flash 4 player was downloaded 80 million times or
more.
But that's all hypothetically speaking. I found this study very convincing.
It is outdated now and it doesn't say which version of Flash they can see.
But at the rate new computers are being bought (which come with Flash
pre-installed) and the rate at which new browsers are being downloaded
(which also come with the Flash player), saying 88.3% of internet users can
view Flash 4 content won't be far off. For those of you who are still not
convinced, I suggest conducting your own survey and be sure to let us know
how that turns out six months down the road.
