Buy it!
There's nothing like cranking through 21 Flash projects (15 utilities, 6 games)
(I admit I've just started), where you have (1) clear step-by-step instructions
and (2) all the artwork (cool) already provided, to drag you kicking and
screaming through a Massive Flash Education!
The first ActionScript learning comes on page 20, 2nd project. Here's the code
involved:
Stop
If (password eq "Open")
Go to and Play ("Good")
Else
Go to and Play ("Bad")
End If
The book takes off from there. Eight page appendix detailing ActionScript
commands and syntax, with lotsa guidelines and hints and tips that "the authors
... learned ... the hard way: by trial and error".
Scott Hamlin (one of the authors) is a genius when it comes to clearly
expressing how *and why* to do things. He wrote *Effective Web Animation* a year
or so ago ... another excellent book.
